Trusting God for Your Promise

So Moses told the people of Israel what the Lord said, but they refused to listen anymore. They had become too discouraged by the brutality of their slavery. – Exodus 6:9

The people of Israel were slaves in Egypt, under the order of Pharaoh. The Lord had given them the promise that one day they would be free. But when it didn’t happen the way they thought it would, they lost hope. Their hearts hardened because they chose to magnify their problem instead of God’s faithfulness.

As Christians, we too will face opposition. We too will have to wait on promises to be fulfilled, probably not the way we think they should be fulfilled. But that doesn’t mean God isn’t good. It doesn’t mean He hasn’t heard our prayers or is ignoring our desires.

You can rest assured that God is working. He’s best at working behind the scenes. He’s preparing to fulfill the promise He’s given you at the perfect time, according to His will for your life.

Our Promise Fulfilled

While my husband and I were waiting for our first child, before we even conceived, God gave us a promise. He told us we were going to have a girl and her name would be Savannah Rose. So naturally we figured that when we did get pregnant, it would be a girl. We were wrong. Our first was a boy! And our second was a boy! And our third was a boy! And our fourth AND our fifth! Needless to say, we were quite shocked when we found out our sixth baby was a girl!

ELEVEN years after we received a promise from God, He fulfilled it. Now please don’t get me wrong, He certainly fulfilled our promise of children before that and we are SO blessed to have ALL our amazing children! But as good as I got as raising boys, I still longed for a girl and thought at times that maybe the promise wasn’t ever to going to come true.

But then I would remember that God WAS still working. He was working behind the scenes, preparing the soil.

After Savannah was born, a friend of mind shared a word with me. She had been reading a book called The Spirit of Adoption: Winning the Battle for the Children. In the book, the author’s wife had a dream of adopting a baby girl from a field or meadow (savannah). Years later, the promise was fulfilled and they named her Savannah Zoe and call her Zoe (meaning life) because she had come from a “lifeless field” (definition of savannah).

Around the same time, my friend was also reading a Christian fiction novel. In the story, the daughter was trying to take care of her mother’s roses. A gardener was informing her that roses need just the right amount of soil, sunlight, and water. They need the perfect conditions to bloom.

Our Savannah Rose needed the perfect conditions to bloom. Had she been born any earlier, the timing wouldn’t have been right and she wouldn’t have fit so perfectly into God’s will for our lives. He has prepared her for this time. He has a special plan and purpose just for her.

We could have taken matters into our own hands and “forced” ourselves to conceive a girl. But we chose to trust God. And you can, too. He is faithful and his word will never return void.

  1. God has always given me promises throughout my life. My first promise that he gave me was at 12 years old. He said, “If you will put me first in your life, I will give you the desires of your heart.” There were 2 things that I knew that I wanted at 12 years old. I wanted to go to college, and I wanted to have a Christian husband. Both at that point in my life seemed impossible. But 8 and 10 years later, God fulfilled every part of that promise. Every season of my life, God has given me specific promises and though some were fulfilled more immediately, some were fulfilled in a God-given time. But He has always fulfilled every promise that He gave me. “Though it tarry, it shall surely come.”
